the problem

Most personal finance apps are either too complex (full-featured accounting software) or too simple (basic expense lists). Users need a middle ground real-time tracking with meaningful analytics that actually help them understand their spending.

what i built

Built a full-stack personal finance tracker that combines intuitive expense logging with powerful budget management and visual analytics, striking the balance between simplicity and depth.

tools, and why

React for the interactive dashboard UI with real-time updates. Supabase for real-time database, authentication, and API eliminated the need for a separate backend server while providing row-level security. Tailwind for rapid UI iteration on the data-heavy dashboard.

the hard part

Designing a data model that supports multiple currencies and complex categorization without becoming unwieldy. Solved with a flexible schema that normalizes amounts to a base currency while storing the original currency, and uses a hierarchical category system.
